What is OpenClaw and How to setup.

OpenClaw is a powerful open-source autonomous AI agent framework designed to act as your "digital twin." Unlike a standard chatbot, it can execute real-world tasks (like managing emails, booking flights, or controlling files) through messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Discord.

Think of it as the "operating system for personal AI"—it connects your favorite LLMs (Claude, GPT, or local models) to various tools and your preferred chat apps.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

  • Runtime: Node.js version 22.x or higher (v24 is recommended).
  • Hardware: At least 2GB RAM (4GB+ preferred) and 1GB disk space.
  • AI Access: An API key (Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, or Google Gemini) OR a local backend like Ollama or LM Studio.

Setting Up OpenClaw

1. Installation

The easiest way to install OpenClaw is via the official one-line script.

macOS / Linux / WSL2:

Bash

curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash

Windows (PowerShell):

PowerShell

iwr -useb https://openclaw.ai/install.ps1 | iex

2. The Onboarding Wizard

Once installed, run the onboarding command to configure your identity, AI model, and security settings:

Bash

openclaw onboard --install-daemon

  • Quickstart: Select "Quickstart" for a standard setup.
  • Provider: Choose your AI provider (e.g., Anthropic) and paste your API Key.
  • Security: For the "Gateway" setting, choose Loopback (127.0.0.1) unless you specifically need to access the agent from another machine.

3. Connecting a Communication Channel

To talk to your agent from your phone, you need to link a channel.

  • WhatsApp: Run openclaw channels login and scan the QR code with your phone (Settings > Linked Devices).
  • Telegram: Open Telegram, find @BotFather, create a /newbot, and paste the token when prompted by openclaw configure.

4. Accessing the Dashboard

After setup, OpenClaw will provide a local URL (usually http://127.0.0.1:18789).

Open this in your browser to manage your Skills (extensions that allow the agent to use tools like Google Search, Calendar, or GitHub).

Copy the Access Token printed in your terminal to log in.

Pro-Tips for Success

  • Verification: Run openclaw doctor to check if your configuration is healthy.
  • Logs: If something isn't working, check the live output with openclaw logs.
  • Local AI: If you want to avoid API costs, install Ollama first, then select "Local" or "Ollama" during the onboarding wizard.
  • Persistence: Using the --install-daemon flag ensures OpenClaw starts automatically when your computer boots.
